Squirrel Island Historical Society: Truck Guys
Buzzy Warren: 1958 - 8?
Lawrence Frye Warren, who was often referred to as "Buzzy," worked on the trucks for the island alongside Carl Nickerson. Buzzy was born in 1933 in Massachusetts and eventually moved to Maine to attend the University of Maine in Orono. Many islanders remember him as being very handy and helpful around the Island. Buzzy Warren was Carl's "right-hand man." Betty Knake and Dave Walradt recalled in an interview that Buzzy used to do the best imitations of Carl. The two of them used to operate a small lobster business for the islanders on the island. They had a lobster tank set up in the freight shed and would sell them from there. Betty Knake remembers that Buzzy always "cleaned up nicely" for island dances.

Islander Jack Newbury recalls that Buzzy had always had a cyst on his neck that would have prevented him from being allowed into the military. At Jack's suggestion, Buzzy finally saw an island doctor who was able to have it removed and Buzzy served in the military. However, Buzzy was a Christian Scientist and after the initial visit to the island doctor, he apparently never went back for a health check-up. Betty Knake recalls that Buzzy's last year on the island was either 1986 or 1987. He passed away on 13 January 1994.
