Squirrel Island LIA Meeting Notes

Latest News:
Elaine Henderson just added page 89
Thank you Elaine!
Elaine runs a rich glass site at http://www.patternglass.com/ and was just visiting to look at my glass books.

I am associated with a historical society for a summer community in Maine called Squirrel Island. We call the society the Squirrel Island Historical Society, (SIHS).

The women on the island formed an association to improve island life and they refered to themselves as the LIA or the Ladies Improvement Association. The LIA started in about 1884 and is active today. The purpose of these pages is to present the minutes from the LIA meetings from 1884 to 1905. Some people may enjoy reading the minutes and I hope others will enjoy helping me transcribe the minutes and offer corrections for previous transcriptions

If you just want to read the minutes,
That link takes you to a page that presents JUST the transcription of the minutes as it presently exists. As of 12/30/06, pages 1-8 and 29-44 have been done.

If you would like to help with the transcription or just see some of the minute pages,
and you will be taken to that area. Once there, you will see that transcriptions already completed appear with the minute pages.

Lastly, a note about the minutes. As you will seem they were recorded in a book with pre-numbered pages and those numbers are the main organizational structure that is presented here. You will also see in several of the scans that there are year tabs sticking out of the book. There are tabs for the years 1884 to 1892. The book is in fairly poor shape. It is held together with scotch tape. Any curator would be upset at its condition. My personal opinion is that spending money to preserve the actual book is not a priority. We should mainly be interested in preserving the information recorded. That is the purpose of this project. There is also an interesting yellow post-it attached to the front of the minutes that says "This was in tin box but is Ladies Improvement Society records." Our everlasting thanks go to the person who found the tin box and recognized the minutes for what they were.
