I’m a little beat. Felt better yesterday, may have had something to do with having a rain day Monday. I took the 6:15 bus out of Kilometer Zero. I was the first one there at 6?am About 8 guys showed up by 6:15 when we left. The pace was as usual fast. I was glade to make it to 5K and then to 9K. I was worried about making the farris wheel at 13K but things slowed down a little and I made it. At the very beginning two guys stayed in back of me. I usually like to be at the back so I do not have to worry about anyone or give hand signals for pot holes. I need both hand on the bike to ride, no extra energy for signalling. The guys behind me and later in front of me were talking. I say practicing their Spanish. Talking is a sign that the hammer is not really down, we are not running all out.
I got dropped just before the hill at the archaeological site. Nothing special. We stopped a couple times for red lights and I was able to get back on. Guys take turns at the front “pulling” the group and then drift to the back. They expect to get behind me so that at some point I would be in the lead but that is not going to happen. When it does, like on my normal Wednesday night ride in NH, I just slow down until someone gets the point and passes.
Anyway, in the course of one of these “drop backs”, the to of us were gaped off and I just did not make the extra effort it takes to get back on. I waved the chase car around. I was happy with how far I got. Further than yesterday and definitely beyond the bad traffic. I take the pace down and enjoy the ride. I now do not turn around at the Blue Sphere but instead take the Hotel Road one more K to 307 and turn North to Cancun. Yesterday I had water and dog problems. Today, one of the two puddles forced me out into the road a little. The dogs barked but did not chase. I did have to go out to pass two runners going the wrong way on my side and was too close to a bus that beeped.
The 5K of bike path had more walkers than usual and even a car! I was home by 8, ready to do this record and start my day. The plan is to go to Playa del Carmen. It is the next town south after Puerto Morelos. I spent a fair amount of time at dinner and El Estrada yesterday looking at internet ideas for beer bars in Carman. I went last year and really enjoyed it but it looks as if my favorite brewery is closed. I’ll have to check the 2018 Cancun pages here and see if I recorded the actual names.
