Lunch. Every dat at Surfin Buritto. I leave home about 11:15 to get there before noon and I had 100% success getting a seat at the outside table, closest to the road so I can watch the parade of people going by.
I have to be on the inward side, facing out. As people come and go, I move to a middle seat. That way, people can sit on the left or the right of me, so I have 100% increase in having someone sit down that I can talk to as opposed to being on an end and only one group can sit next to me! I prepare a nice trap of 2-3 stools, a napkin holder and a menu to hopefully lewder them in. Think of it as a nice spider web with Tom as the spider!
Flow mainly works drinks. She will come out to deliver items but does not take orders and usually is just working the drink station. Carol is the normal hostess, waitress, cashier. The Point of Sale cash register is a challenge. Carol fights with it daily. Carol is wonderful. Took very good care of me but suffers. Flow is steady, Carol has good and bad days. Flow takes breaks, cigarette? She will be gone for 10 minutes at regular occasions. Carol seems to never leave but it is possible that she just goes another way and I do not notice. I am always facing out as I have said! A couple men will take waitress shifts. One has excellent English but is a little more challenged to actually carry out the tasks.
I do not seem to have a picture of the menu. Another reason to return in 2024! I do have pictures of the Buritto checklist and my drink notes! You will note the one on the far right is not filled out. I kept it to give to new customers!
The area in front of Surfin is constant activity. I only saw this woman on two different days, these two pictures are from the second.
I told someone I thought the children were an important part of the marketing team.
This is my normal view:
Surfin Burrito may get its name because it is next to a surf shop. I have been watching the shop operation for years. It really is a well run establishment. No yelling, no running around, no crisis. The boss is a handsome 40? year old who I will call Philly as that is where he is from.
The instructors leave from the shop with the clients, walking usually to the nearest beach but I assume to whereever the surf is best. One young man who was caught in my spider web was wondering about if he could carry the heavy board. I assured him that the instructor did the lugging.
One more random picture from my station before we get into the food.
Alright, a little bow to food before we close. Here is the famous Buritto that I ate 8 out of my 13 lunches at Surfin. If you have to guess what I am going to do, it is a money maker to bet that I will do exactly what I did before. 7 years biking in Cancun. 6 years in Lagos Portugal.
I tried 3 other items on the menu. The chicken Jerk, both the dark meat one and the white meat one and the chicken quesadilla.
The name of the book as you can see is Trust by Diaz. I highly recommend it. I really enjoyed reading it when my spider trap was empty. Wife Kim read the reviews before reading the book while I just plowed in and had to figure out what was going on on my own. Very unique.
Drinks can be served in a coconut. I assume that the coconut is chopped open, the insides are taken out and a drink poured in. Or maybe they just put a straw in and you drink whatever coconut water is in there? Having never tried one, I have no idea. They are in some sense a take away item. You buy it and walk down the road. I am certainly glade that I have at least this mystery to answer in 2024! One day, one of the men from the “kitchen” came out and prepared some coconuts.
