Cancun 2022: Bus Rides

I have spoken about the Cancun public busses from inside and outside. From outside, they are a real generator of anxiety for me when I am riding. From inside, they are a wonderful 50 cent way to access and travel the Hotel Road. At first this year, I was reticent to use them due to Covid but after a few days I was back to using them all the time, just trying to find ones that were not too crowded and sit by an open window.

Come along on a ride with me:

There is also one dangerous move for me while a bus rider, exit. It is always good to exit from the back of the bus so you do not have to deal with the unknown of people wanting to get on, which has to be in the front door. One pushes a button to alert the driver to your wanting to get off at the next safe pullout. Of course I get off the bus once daily at Surfin. I have the routine down pretty well. I move to the back in plenty of time and I push the button once I see that my pullout is the next one possible. However, there can be a problem. If someone is getting off at the same stop at the front of the bus AND no one is waiting to get on, the bus driver is libel to time the whole event on what he sees before him, the front exit. He does not watch my progress. The bus stops, I scramble down the stairs and propel myself out onto the sidewalk. Rarely, the bus has already begun to move and I am really jumping from a moving platform. I don’t have a video of such a death dufiing exit but here is a more controled one that hopefully gives you some idea of the adventures that populate my daily life in Cancun.

After one particularly harrowing event, I started to concentrate more! I got as far down on the rear steps as I could without blocking the rear door as it opens in. I moved very quickly as soon as the door was open and the bus at rest. The above video only gives you a poor approximation of the challenge. Having people coming after me assures that the driver will not take off immedicably as my body exits the bus.
