I arrived late Wednesday 1/3/24.
The normal direct flight from Boston and entry into Cancun life was not smooth. After 7 years, I think that I have it down pretty pat but had hiccups this year! They started with the flight being rescheduled by the airline via an email to me. That seems to be more and more common? Someone in the industry will have to explain to us what is happening. My memory is that it did not happen in the past and now happens with every booking?
I book my flight to get into Cancun as early as possible without being crazy. Landing about 2pm might be ideal. My original booking called for such but was moved to a more 5pm arrival. Once I arrive, I have a lot to do. Get to the airbnb, pick up the bike at the nearby bike store and check on the group rides, go to the super market and pick up snacks and breakfast, and finally walk to the El Parque de las Palapas, the plaza of children and my favorite first night mexican dinner in a fairly nice place.
You will note that I arrived Jan 3. Pretty darn early. Our younger daughter is getting married in April to a young man from Brazil and in late January we are off with the coulpe to his home town for a few days. I needed to be sure and get back from Cancun with plenty of buffer. AND, I was just back from a great abortive hiking adventure Dec 27-30 but this is a story about Cancun.
Even with the later departure Boston Logan airport, 11:30 am, I need to catch a 7:30 C&J local airport bus from a town near our home, Seabrook, NH. My wife Kim was gracious enough to get up way too early and take me to the bus terminal. Upon arrival, I discovered that I had left a piece of luggage at home!
For years, I have traveled with a backpack and suitcase. I work very hard to take the suitcase onboard as carry on. I also have a whole elaborate system, that my wife hates, where I have another small backpack or pillow case in the backpack and as soon as I get to my set, I discourage a great deal of the backpack contents into that secondary container and place it in the overhead so that my backpack, which was previously the size of a large watermelon, now fits under the seat in front of me.
I had read and noted that people were able to carry a 3ed! piece of luggage on the plane if it was deemed a medical device. I travel with a CPAP machine. (I do not think I have sleep apnea, or at least a very very mild case. Mainly I snore and have gotten addicted to the CPAP as a condition of remaining in my marital bed.) I used to have to give valuable room in the suitcase to the CPAP but have now discovered that I can carry it on in its own pouch and even stuff a few more items, binoculars and pills, in this case, to Cancun. This is just my third flight in this 3 carry on configuration, but I have never been questioned.
But back to the story. While unloading at C&J, I realized that I had left the CPAP case in our mud room. Once home, Kim found it, researched Fedex, decided it was easier to just race to Logan airport. Since I was flying international I had left lots of time and was able to go out to the departures, meet her, and retrieve my 3ed item. Once again, I am deeply appreciative to my wonderful wife!
