Under Construction
As I have said, Hangzhou had the best beer and English speaking patrons so far. I’m getting closer to Shanghai. This is to some extent a resort town.
The closest highly recommended beer bar to the hotel was called Midtown Brewery and I made a bee line for it the first night. Well, bee line as long as you imagine a bee flitting from flower to flower in the area. And these were not flowers I was stopping at, just strange streets and corners. The GPS got me to the general area. After at least one trip around the block I identified the hotel it was supposed to be in. Several trips into and around the lobbys of the hotel, still no brewery. The receptionists pointed me toward it and 10 minutes later I was back asking for even more help. What can I say. Finally she walked me to the door. Luckily the bar opened onto a patio and streets so that in subsequent trips I just came in that way! I can only put the initial confusion down as a brain fart.
So, great bar, great beer.
I even indulge in a little western food.
Upon leaving I found this Tapas establishment next door and talked to the owner. Sorry to say I never got back to try it.
The next day, I went off to explore. Bus was my chosen poison. I hope I had determined correctly that the subway system did not do a good job of getting me to this far side of West Lake. My target was lunch at a widely advertised bar, college, which was on the other side of the famous West Lake. As I have explained elsewhere, I never found a good bus map in any city. The gold standard was to write down the bus numbers listed on the stand in front of my hotel and then once I did get to a target, write down the numbers of the buses that came there and hope for a match!!
Anyway, after a lot of getting on and off buses, when they turned the wrong direction, I finally felt I was in the right area. I approched a well dressed young man on the street and he spoke English! Turned out he was a Theoretical Physicist! But even more important, he could direct me down the street to College.
I arrived at about 10am so I had to ride the buses, do a little more exploring before they opened and I was the first customer!
They even had a menu and signs in English so I was able to determine that today, Sunday, there was a German special and it was Snitzel!
Very good
And I had a little company at the bar.
About 2 blocks from my hotel was a store that people said online had great beer. It was closed when I first found it.
But when I got back, it really lived up to expectations. Great selection with lots of Belgium’s!
Bar number 3 in Hangzhou is called Eudora Station. They have a nice outdoor porch.
I enjoyed the beer and it looks like a quesadilla,
They are advertising an event at the restaurant. I wonder what language the patrons speak?
