Korea 2024: Gangneung Wed

Another travel day and you know what that means, a new room! But it comes at the end. We started the day in Gyeongju where we have been for the last 3 nights mainly looking at archeological sites. We will move to Gangneung which is really the “furthest off the beaten path” of any place we have been to. It is on the east coast. It is mainly a beach town. It hosted a lot of venues in the Winter 2018 Olympics.

There is no regular breakfast picture as we each went off and got our own. Mine from McDonalds
Kim’s was supposed to be from Starbucks but she decided it was too far away so used Paris Bakery instead.
Before we board the bus, I have one yesterday left over story. As you may know, Kim is a bit of a rule breaker.

She had asked me a couple days ago when I was going to the super market, to check out the Banana situation. I reported that there were tons but they were green. So the next day Kim returned to the supermarket, selected 3 and went to pay. The cashier was livid! She closed her station and took kim forceable by the arm back to the bananas and made it clear that well behaved shoppers pick a BUNCH, they do not take individual bananas from several different bunches. Thus, Kim arrived home with the above weeks supply!

The above banana incident is just one of a pattern. From Tuesday we see kim outside a bakery/candy store/

It seems that she was happily picking out a few different choice items, took them to the register and again had to be taken aside for remedical shopping instruction. You do not pick out the items yourself, the clerk does the selecting. If you pick so few, as was the case with Kim, you are punished by not being allowed to use your credit card but instead have to pay cash. Kim came out to get more cash from me but I had no idea of the back story.

Ok, back to the Bus rides. First we travel from Gyeongji to a bigger city on the coast, Pohang. It is a shorft bus ride of less than an hour and the busses leave every 20 minutes. We arrive there and buy our ticket for the next 3+ hour leg to Gangneung.

The whole ride is pretty easy. As I have said, the coaches are quite luxurious, nothing as bad a grayhound!
On the second leg we often have a water view on the right. Kim tried to get seats over there but no luck.
Not bad from a bus window and me sitting on the other side of the bus!
A little boat.
Hills and hills and lots of tunnels that I did not film.
Finally the end and off to lunch by way of a short taxi ride.
At a brewery no less! Beer was good. I bought 3 bottles to take with us to the room.
Pizza was good. We are still a 20 minute taxi ride from the room but all went well.
Kim struggled for the last 24 hours to confirm the reservation. She was worried we would not make the 6pm check in.
Crazy set up. Only a double bed at the top of long stairs and the bathroom is on the lower level!
Kim picked all our accommodations and did wonderfully!
The actual beach town, Gangnun Beach is a good 20 minute walk away. We did it just now looking for dinner.
The reastrauants on the strip are all ones with fish in tanks outside, as you would expect at a beach!
We came back to one near our room and had both a spicy and plain Tofu. It was fine.
We did manage to catch a little of the robot action. We have seen these guys before but never were able to video!

Kim is working on activities for her tomorrow. I am liable to take it easy and not go off on another adventure.
