I had to decide between Lunch or Dinner and since Lunch usually involves a ride it seemed simpler to try Dinners. As you will see, I am pretty good about taking a picture of the food at each meal but I am sure I miss some. And I am very poor at knowing the name of many restaurants!
Sunday Dinner is at the wonderful Belgian Delirium Tremens bar, just below a main square in Barrio Alto where the Easter Festival thrived.
Monday, my first night in Lagos I returned to la Esterella, a wonderful Belgium restaurant that was not open for my visit last year as I was too early in the season.
On to Tuesday night in Lagos. NO IMAGES. I ate at one of the most popular restaurants, Cantinho Algarvio. I will describe the Rabbit Stew and the people at the next table, but a brain fart, no image! It is right along the restaurant row off the main plaza. The restaurants on either side are pretty much empty and the proprietors are out on the outdoor seating area soliciting customers. I went in, signaled that I was a single and was seated right by the door. The proprietor keeps a couple tables for early walkins in this area. The best thing for me is that normally the tables are so close together that I am able to strike up a conversation with the diners at the next table.
They were Swedish. I can’t reconstruct the actual first exchange. I am pretty sure it was the man and not me making one of my patented general comments about the weather or such. Anyway, we were soon off the the races. The wife indulged a little but as the man got further into his daily rant about taxes being too high, she clearly tried to extinguish it by not participating. He, actually probably they, had traveled extensively on business, living for many months at a time in places like the new part of Shanghai. I could establish my credentials by talking about biking through that area to the sea.
They were recently retired, though he certainly looked young. They had a apartment in Lagos and were starting to spend more time here. We did some politics. Even though he was desperate to keep more of his hard earned money, he did recognize that the US really was in trouble as we had allowed too much of a distance to develop between our have and havenot classes. No health care!
They had fish and were really quite amazed that mine was Rabbit Stew. I am never as god a I should be about pickinig the bones out; I think I had a glass of white wine and left without dessert. I did try to joke a little about it being the Easter Bunny I was eating but that probably did not translate.
