View at Squirrel Island Maine 8

A first attempt at a caption. One does not want to be too formulaic but I’ll try starting out describing what we see and then go into detail. If we are allowed to do another, having people in the image as with 2 and 4 might add to interest.  Below is 207 words and dry as hell.  I guess my first thought is to give this basic material in MANY fewer words and add interesting details?

This view is looking East across the main field on Squirrel Island, showing 3 public building and two cottages.  The building on the left is obviously the Chapel. In was built in 1880, ten years after the summer colony was established on Squirrel in 1870.  It displays the “old” steeple so we know the image was taken before 1915(date to be checked).

The forth building from the left is the Casino.  It was built in 1890. A new side and back porch were added subsequently.  Many Maine summer communities had a public recreational building like this and called a casino.  There was no gambling!

The building on the far right is the Davenport  Library.  It was given to the island in 1905 by A.H Davenport, a major benefactor to the summer community and  a Boston furniture and decorating magnet.
